From a colleague:
In a weird addition to an experiment i'm doing i need to use some sound clips that are associated with different emotions. I could do with any suggestions you might have; basically, if you can think of any sounds you might associate with -
Fear (e.g. thunder? gunfire?)
Disgust
Anger
Happiness
Sadness
Surprise

- it would be most helpful! Thanks people!

Apparently there are Cliff Richard records which cover fear, disgust, anger and sadness, but individual ideas are preferable. There we go; all suggestions welcome. And if you're reading this at work, I suggest that the least you can do is lend him some of your processing power.

The processor-sharing would probably be a bit easier if we had any idea who this was or where he was to be found :)

Is my comments area not good enough for you, friend? The only alternative would be to mail me; I don't imagine he'd be keen on having his address published here :)

This is harder than it first appears. I might suggest, for instance, the sound of Thatcher speaking for 'disgust', but sadly not everyone would agree. So the hunt is on for more universally acknowledged sounds. I then thought of farting, as something more basic, but even that could be classified under 'disgust' for some people, but 'surprise' or 'humorous', for instance, for others (eg teenage boys).

Yep, so it's tricky. And even something that you might associate with 'fear', such as a bomb about to land on your head, or the roar of a lion that's about to maul you, is hard, as these are sounds that we might not even recognise, not being used to them.

Wish I could be more helpful.

Fear - Twilight Zone music/Jaws music

Disgust - The "Spplooop. Spppllooopp. Spllooop." sound.

Anger - Dog growling

Happiness - Birds chittering

Sadness - A descending tone (like in cartoons)

Surprise - "Boing!" (like in cartoons)

... these are pretty much staples that almost anyone will recognize... we've been trained by the media. Any ol' designer knows this. :)

Apparently I misunderstood the notion of processor sharing. In context it sounded to me like some kind of SETI-style distributed computation, but it looks like you were talking about *thinking*.

It probably says more about me than I really want you to know, but the only easy one of these is:

Disgust -- the sound of vomiting, that clenching gurgle followed by the gush and splatter of stomach contents, which can hardly fail to bring on sympathetic nausea.

Perhaps laughter for happiness? It is infectious and self-reinforcing, though it has a baleful side too.

And I suppose weeping for sadness -- also infectious, for me, other people's crying always make me sad, sometimes unbearably so. But that is more difficult to hear, to isolate as a meaningful sound. The bitterest tears are often silent.
