election day
Today is the day; the United States is going to the polls, and the big question is whether the country will once again make a mockery of the democratic election process.
I have my thoughts about what is going to happen, but until all is seen and done, there's no point in dwelling on something that is entirely out of my hands.
I've voted. That is all that I could do; if the country re-elects an incompetent, I will be enormously disappointed, but knowing that I voted for the other man - the democrat, whether he is an ideal candidate in my eyes or not - is enough; I now have a right to complain each and every time Bush fucks up in the future, though really, I'd rather not have to complain at all.
Go, Red Sox!

welcome back. i was beginning to worry about you!
You're registered in California, aren't you?
I don't know if this pertains in CA, but at dinner the other night with an American expat who also happens to be a professor of political science I learned the rather dismaying fact that while states are legally obliged to collect overseas postal ballots, they are not required to count them. This person no longer bothers to vote, on the rather sensible grounds that her home state just throws the postal votes away. It seems the whole execution of federal democracy is, by design, at the whim of the state authorities -- which, all else aside, doesn't make one too hopeful for Florida this time out...
Good luck to you, anyway, for today's outcome. And to us all.
It is sad that these are the days where you have to vote not for the better candidate, someone that deserves the job, but the lesser of the two evils.
Ah, but we may not have the right to complain about Bush's mistakes for much longer. We may not, in fact, have any rights for much longer. Perhaps I'll join you fellows over in Great Britain as an expat.
You think that the handful of rights not yet removed from United Kingdom residents will stick around any longer than those you have? Pah!
Pick another country ;-)
The Red Sox continue to hold onto their World Championship, as of today, at least.
